WINDOWSEAT PICTURES GOES 3D FOR CONVERSE

Los Angeles, CA:  WINDOWSEATpictures was tapped by Converse to create a stereographic 3D video campaign for the launch of professional skateboarder Rune Glifberg's Pro Model shoe. WINDOWSEAT produced 3 irreverent and entertaining 60 second viral videos and a 30 second TV spot that would bring viewers into the 3D world while showcasing the skateboarding talents of Rune Glifberg and the Converse skateboarding team.   "This was our first 3D project, so we had to approach our shooting style with a 3D mindset, something completely different from our usual approach to production.  Understanding what makes a successful 3D composition, like convergence and foreground elements, played a critical role in enhancing the 3D experience for our audience, “ says Moz Mirbaba Executive Producer of WINDOWSEATpictures.

21st Century 3D provided the camera systems consisting of 2- Red One HD cameras, a beam splitter, and a highly technical team to ensure the 3D was maximized from a visual standpoint. The footage was shot in 4K and 2K for overcranking effects.  "We handled post production of episodes 1 & 3, as well as the 30 second spot, in-house using our Final Cut Pro work stations. We were able to quickly edit and create anaglyphic 3D edits using plug-ins for Final Cut so our clients could view every version of the edits in 3D. Once the edits were final we were able to easily output a version for polarized projection as well ” says Matt Devino – Lead Editor at WINDOWSEATpictures.

Episode 2 features Rune skating in a CG animated world consisting of a stop-motion-style stereographic dream sequence. WINDOWSEATpictures reached out to Black Swan of Venice, CA to handle the visual effects. "Nick Losq and Chris Clyne created this world… using sequential footage of Rune skating several skateparks and half pipes. We built the environmental elements whose contours would match Rune’s movement.  Our elements had to be constructed in a way that would capture the full depth of field possible in the Anaglyph 3d render, pushing chunks of debris close to camera as Rune would skate by. We used proprietary scripts in Maya to do all our left/right camera compositing in-render, which was a huge time and budget saver," says Matt Winkel - Partner Black Swan.  So far, the campaign has been a success for Converse.  It is one of the most highly viewed videos on the Converse site.

The campaign was shot at the legendary The Pink Motel in Sun Valley, CA , followed by a 4-week Post production process at WINDOWSEATpictures.  Tools used included Final Cut Pro 7, Dashwood Stereo3D Toolbox, Red Alert, Red Rushes, and AJA Kona 3, and Maya.
