Oct. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- BMIs Q410 South Africa Retail Report forecasts that the countrys retail sales will grow from ZAR564.01bn (US$68.39bn) in 2010 to ZAR832.27bn (US$100.91bn) by 2014. Key factors behind this expansion will be underlying economic growth, rising disposable incomes, falling unemployment, increasing urbanisation and the emergence of a black middle class.

South Africas nominal GDP is predicted to be US$351.41bn in 2010, with the previous years decline of 1.8% expected to translate into growth of 3.0% in 2010 as the economy slowly begins to recover. Average annual GDP growth of 3.9% is predicted by BMI between 2010 and 2014. With the population increasing from 49.7mn in 2010 to an estimated 51.7mn by 2014, GDP per capita is forecast to rise by 74.7% by the end of the forecast period, reaching US$12,360. We believe consumer spending per capita will increase from US$4,269 in 2010 to US$7,442 by 2014.

Consumer spending is boosted by foreign visitors to South Africa. In 2008, according to Statistics South Africa (SSA), spending by visitors amounted to ZAR74.2bn (US$9.5bn). Following a difficult 2009, foreign visitor numbers are again on the increase. Arrivals rose by 16.3% during the first four months of 2010 compared with the same period in 2009, according to Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk.

In 2005, 64.1% of the South African population was described by the UN as economically active, with 36.8% in the 20-44 age range crucial for retail sales. By 2015, 64.3% of the population is expected to be economically active, while the proportion of those in the 20-44 age range is forecast to reach 38%. Growing urbanisation is also contributing to a vibrant retail sector, with a 26% increase in the number of urban households between 1994 and 2005. In 2005, less than 58% of the population was classified by the UN as urban, and this is forecast to increase to more than 64% by 2015.

According to BMI data, retail sub-sectors predicted to show strong growth over the forecast period include consumer electronics, sales of which are expected to increase from US$6.74bn in 2010 to US$9.63bn by the end of the forecast period, a rise of nearly 43%. South Africas tech-literate, high-end consumer electronics market is the largest in Africa, and youthful demographics, rising incomes and a regional economic boom should all support expansion.

Sales of over the counter (OTC) pharmaceutical products are forecast to grow by nearly 62%, from US$0.33bn in 2010 to US$0.54bn by 2014. Vehicle sales are forecast to rise by just over 22%, from US$11.63bn in 2010 to US$14.19bn in 2014. The size of the country, significant rural areas and the agricultural sector provide a substantial market for four-wheel drive vehicles, light pickups and SUVs.

We estimate that overall food consumption in South Africa in 2010 will account for 52.7% of total retail sales, worth US$36.06bn. This is forecast to increase to 54.9% of overall retail sales by 2014. The South African mass grocery retail (MGR) sector, comfortably Africas largest in terms of value, is forecast to be worth US$31.59bn in 2010, representing 87.6% of the total food market. BMI expects its value to rise to US$44.15bn by 2014, when it will account for 79.8% of the food market.

Retail sales for our set of Middle East and Africa (MEA) countries in 2010 are predicted to amount to US$183.52bn, based on the varying national definitions. Total consumer spending for the region based on BMIs macroeconomic database is expected to reach US$673.32bn. In 2010, BMI predicts that South Africa and Israel will together account for an estimated 56.8% of regional retail sales, and their combined share is forecast to rise to 57.2% by 2014. For South Africa, its estimated 2010 market share of 36.7% is expected to rise to 39.9% by 2014.
