Oct. 6, 2010 - PRLog -- San Diego, CA, October 06, 2010 -- The 24-hour Survivor Crop for the Cure is back to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and research through Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, San Diego. Attendees will be crafting and scrapbooking beginning at 9:00 a.m. on October 16 to 9:00 a.m. on October 17. Sponsored by North County-based Ever After Scrapbooks, this fun-filled event is held at Ever After Scrapbooks and The Creekview Plaza, located just behind the store. Scrapbooking will officially kickoff at noon!

This year, the Survivor Crop organizers have set a goal of raising $70,000 by adding additional fundraising opportunities, including a silent auction. Each attendee is required to make a minimum $125 donation to Komen San Diego, but the passionate participants are also given incentives to compete for Ultimate Survivor (highest fundraiser) individually and as a team. With the fun-raising meter rising by the hour, over $21,000 has been raised so far. This is the second year that participants have the capability to raise funds online, so anyone, anywhere, anytime can conveniently contribute to support a participant. Also, the event will feature the Ever After Scrapbooks’ Think Pink Silent Auction, which includes products donated by Sony and includes a variety of crafting materials.

This unique event, which brings together crafters of all types, but especially scrapbookers and paper crafters with a common interest in helping Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, San Diego in its mission to eradicate breast cancer forever, has raised more than $400,000 since its inception in 2001.

“Breast cancer affects women in their most productive years. With current statistics suggesting that one in eight women will develop breast cancer, it is more important than ever to raise awareness and do everything we can to help find the cure,” said Camille Akin, founder of Ever After Scrapbooks. “We are thrilled that we can continue to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, San Diego in its efforts during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We are proud that our fun event is not only a great opportunity for people to gather and share their passion for scrapbooking, but also an impactful contribution to the fight against a disease that has touched so many lives.”

As more and more people become involved in this hobby many people have started participating in crops. A crop can best be described as something of a quilting bee in which hobbyists come together to scrapbook, share tools and ideas, as well as to socialize and have fun. Crops can last from a few hours, to a full weekend, or even a full week aboard a cruise ship.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, San Diego
Since its inception in 1995, $8.5 million has been given to local organizations that provide breast cancer education, screening, diagnostics, treatment and patient support for the uninsured or underinsured in San Diego County. Seventy-five percent of every dollar raised through Affiliate-sponsored events stays right here in San Diego County to fund free diagnostic mammograms, treatment and services for uninsured and underinsured women and their families. The remaining 25 percent funds international breast cancer research. In fact, next to the U.S. government, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the largest funder of breast cancer research in the world. Why is the Race for the Cure® so important to San Diego County?
Since launching the breast cancer movement more than 30 years ago, Komen for the Cure has transformed the culture – bringing breast cancer out of the closet – changing the way the world talks about and treats this devastating disease. During the journey, it was often controversial and considered inappropriate to discuss diseases of the breast openly. We’ve come a long way – but we face new challenges. Here in San Diego County, many underserved women find breast cancer at a later and more aggressive stage and have a higher mortality rate. Still others have lost their jobs and can’t afford medical insurance. All of this is compounded by the California state budget crisis which forced the closure of the only free mammogram program open to women in this state. So, we’re doubling our efforts here at Komen San Diego to do what we can to raise additional funds.
