Milton Financials: The UK’s offshore wind energy capacity alone overtakes the global total.

With the recent addition of the largest offshore wind park to its offshore wind energy generation arsenal, the UK now has a greater capacity than the rest of the world combined.

Oct. 5, 2010 - PRLog -- Milton Financials has been informed that when the largest offshore wind park recently came into operation off the coast of Kent, the UK’s total offshore capacity shot past that of the rest of the world combined, rising to 1,341 megawatt (MW) compared with the combined total for the rest of the globe of 1,100 MW.

The UK has invested heavily in offshore wind projects in order to meet its carbon reduction targets as cheaper onshore wind facilities, favored in many other nations, such as Germany, were met with strong local opposition.

The recent addition of the Swedish utility Vattenfall’s Thanet offshore wind farm off the coast of Kent means an additional 300 MW of renewable energy capacity is now available to Britain.

"In the face of the worst recession in living memory, the UK wind energy industry has once again shown its strength and resilience by racing ahead to deliver another GW of installed capacity in less than 12 months," the chief executive of RenewableUK Maria McCaffery told Milton Financials sources.

Britain now relies on renewable energy for around nine percent of its electricity needs according to RenewableUK, Britain’s wind and marine renewables industries association, with the government targeting 15% by 2020, Milton Financials’ research revealed.
