Oct. 5, 2010 - PRLog -- Food Stamps in Idaho 43% Rise in Participants
Idaho #1 in United States
Recently there was an article in The Idaho Statesman newspaper claiming Idaho is 1st in food stamps, in terms of the % of participants rise of 43%. Amazing! Forty million Americans - more than ever before - received food stamps in March (Idaho Statesman, 2010).
Idaho is one of the white collar towns in America and with the emergence of companies like Micron and Hewlett Packard in the late 1990s and early 2000s many residents probably thought it would never come o this because people felt secure on their jobs. Until, the crisis of economic depression towards the end of the George W. Bush Presidency era and early days of Barack Obama’s term.
“The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare is processing 9,000 new food stamp applications each month, said Tom Shanahan, a department spokesman” (Idaho Statesman, 2010).
The surge comes as a surprise to everyone in the state of Idaho, because of the tradition of the state having so few participants of the food stamps program. Idaho normally ranks relatively high in terms of % of people per capita who take part in the food stamps program.
“And Idaho's 43 percent increase in food stamp use over the past year is the largest in the United States” (Idaho Statesman).
The recession as a result of the war between Iraq and the United States is one reason for the food stamps usage rise in Idaho, along with the fact that all participants on food stamps usually have income restrictions correlates to more participants. In Idaho, usually the jobs are for those who have some form of education and those without education or knowing someone high-up in a certain company, you’re usually left stranded.
“Demand for food aid has kept pace with a high unemployment rate, which rose to 9.9 percent in April and may fall to 9.8 percent for May when jobless figures are released Friday, according to a survey by Bloomberg News.”

Once the job market picks up, you’re looking at a situation where people will feel as though their situation was temporary. But, will that be the case? Sure, things are bound to pick up again, but when they do, how long will it last? Will it be simply a bunch of temporary fixes by the presidential administration or local government?

More than 142,200 people in Idaho received emergency food last year, according to a new study by Feeding America (Idaho Staesman, 2010).

Amazingly, the eligibility for food stamps leaves one to wonder if Idaho is feeling the brunt of the recession, more than the other states, because the figures of a 43% increase, for example, put the state 1st among the United States’ 50 states. Based on household size, and adjusted gross income after exemptions including:
•   a standard deduction.
•   a 20 percent earned income deduction.
•   a deduction for dependent care.
•   a deduction for child support paid by a household member.
•   a limited deduction for medical expenses for elderly or disabled individuals.
a limited deduction for excess shelter care expenses.

Gross income limits are established by the Federal Government and each year the numbers are adjusted by the Federal Government.
Definition of benefit eligibility include families that are considered low income. But low income, assumes an income which is less than a figure of $12,000-$15,000 per year. Its one of the questions coming out of the food stamps surge because many of the families are making more money than what is normally considered low income but they actually qualify because of the debt to income guidelines.
Anthony Jordan, the center's executive director, said that “while Congress tried -- and failed -- to push the bailout bill in a matter of days, it took about a year to get a farm bill passed that helps food pantries like his meet increased demand (Gonzalez, 2008).”
Findings for Food Stamps in Idaho research conducted at ProQuest found several articles and Google search netted Idaho Statesman articles, locally in Boise, Idaho. Overall, research suggests high credit card numbers in Idaho (ie.) many people in the state of Idaho with credit cards and high credit balances, resulting in loss of property, and major unpayable debt, once the recession occurred in America.
Conclusive evidence suggests eventually the United States will overcome the financial difficulties of the money recession, but, for now the struggles of war and disagreement with who should be in office, among American people, are keeping the nation back from prospering and gaining financial independence.
