Lloydspharmacy boosts independent living offering with acquisition of Betterlife! UK’s largest internet and mail order retailer of mobility and disability living aids and products bought by Lloydspharmacy
By: Betterlife Healthcare

Oct. 5, 2010 - PRLog -- Lloydspharmacy, the leading community pharmacy and healthcare provider, has acquired majority shareholding in Betterlife, the UK’s largest internet and mail order retailer of mobility and disability living aids and products.

The acquisition, which gives Lloydspharmacy an 80% shareholding, boosts its existing independent living offering, enabling it to offer customers access to Betterlife’s sales and service expertise and provide a broader range of independent living products, including mobility scooters and aids, kitchen and bathing equipment and hoists, lifts and home care products.

The independent living and mobility sector is a rapidly growing market, with retail sales worth around £500 million a year and the business-to business market (such as care homes, health clinics and hospitals) worth an additional £1.1 billion a year.  Lloydspharmacy believes the sector is set for further strong growth as an ageing population seeks to maintain their independence, improve their quality of life and stay in their own homes.

The acquisition reflects Lloydspharmacy’s ongoing commitment to growing the range of healthcare products and services it offers, allowing the company to meet the needs of customers beyond the provision of traditional pharmacy services.

Two of the Betterlife founding directors, Derek Abrahams and Grant Abrahams, will remain with the company as part of the agreement. They will work with Lloydspharmacy to grow Betterlife’s customer base and offer the company’s range of products via Lloydspharmacy’s own website and through its network of over 1,650 pharmacies across the UK, which will stock Betterlife catalogues and a selected product range.

"Betterlife is an excellent strategic fit with Lloydspharmacy that will enable us to offer customers of both companies access to a much wider range of healthcare products," states Paul O’Hanlon, Lloydspharmacy Director.

“Lloydspharmacy has pioneered the provision of online pharmacy and healthcare services, including development of an online doctor service. Betterlife enables us to build this online offering and also take their products to a whole new customer base via our UK network of community pharmacies.”

Betterlife was established in 2005 and is based in Leyland near Preston. The company will retain its existing brand and continue to trade from its existing website under the agreement. A new sub-brand will be introduced in due course for mail order and in-pharmacy customers.

"We are delighted to be selling the Betterlife business to a strong healthcare brand such as Lloydspharmacy and look forward to working with our new partners to continue building the business and service offering," states Derek Abrahams, Betterlife Director.

Both Lloydspharmacy and Betterlife have pioneered the provision of health and wellbeing products and services via the Internet. Lloydspharmacy was the first pharmacy group to launch an online doctor service and it provides a wide range of medication and health products via its online store, complementing the service offered via its UK community pharmacies.
