Employer Nominated Skilled Migration

Oct. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- Prime Minister Julia Gillard and the Minister for Sustainable Population Tony Burke, have both expressed that immigration will be a key to our future population growth. The P.M. has stated that there are parts of Australia desperate for more people to fill the skills shortage.

"I feel strongly that business needs to be able to get access to skilled workers after this nation has done everything it can to generate those skills at home," Ms Gillard told ABC Radio at the end of June.

The government has been fine tuning which skills are required to fill the skills shortage as we have seen with the introduction of the new Skills in Demand (SOL) list which came into effect on the 1st of July.  

On the ABC television program qanda 5th July, Tony Burke MP claimed “people do support a skilled migration program, but they want it to be targeted so that it’s the skills we really need and people are then going and living in the communities where we need those workers”

Industries are still hurting from the skills shortage and the Government claims its committed to supporting businesses that require skilled employees where the skills aren’t available locally, through employer nominated skilled visas.

Australia’s unemployment rate has been decreasing steadily recently, dropping to 5.2% in May. The strong employment figures have many industries looking to overseas workers, and the support of the Government to facilitate this.  

Many businesses and prospective employees believe their vocations are no longer in demand in Australia as they have been removed from the SOL. However the SOL only relates to independent skilled migration where the visa applicant doesn’t have an Australian employer willing to sponsor them.
