Oct. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- How to Prevent Dry Rot in Tires

The formation of the fungus known as dry rot is a common problem affecting a sizable number of vehicle tires. If you're worried about your tires falling victim to dry rot, don't despair; there are two easy steps that will significantly reduce your tires' risk of developing this type of fungus.

Tools You'll Need
Car cover
Commercial tire protector
Expendable cloth

Step 1 - Keep Your Tires out of the Sun
While a regular amount of sun exposure shouldn't do any harm to your tires, excessive exposure to UV rays is among the most common causes of dry rot in car tires, as well as a number of other rubber-based objects. With this in mind, it is recommended that you park your vehicle in well-shaded areas whenever possible, particularly if you live in a warm climate. Regardless, take care to avoid any dangerous-looking parking garages. If you have no choice but to park your car in a sun-heavy area, you may want to invest in a car cover that protects the entire vehicle.

Step 2 - Regularly Apply a Commercial Tire Protector
In addition to being careful about where you park your vehicle, a monthly application of tire protector is a great way to shield your tires from dry rot-causing UV rays. When shopping around, make a point of purchasing a water-based protector. Although application instructions may vary slightly depending on the brand, most protectors can be applied to tires with the aid of a cloth and are most effective when administered on a monthly basis.
