Oct. 1, 2010 - PRLog -- What work experiences led to my current position
I always tell people I got lucky with finding my job.  I was a marketing and international business major at the University of Nevada, Reno with dreams of working in marketing for large multinational companies.  I started with Meridian Business Advisors as a marketing intern in 2002, my last year of college.  I did very little marketing work, instead working with clients to create business plans and budgets, and had my first experience working with fiscal impact analyses.  This was going to be a stepping stone for me, but over time I realized I enjoyed doing the economic and financial work much more than marketing, so I remained with the company.  With my undergraduate background in marketing and business, I felt I needed additional experience in finance and economics, so I went back to UNR for my MBA and received training and certifications in accounting and finance.  Today I manage the fiscal and economic analysis divisions of our business and provide  Expert Witness services specializing in litigation concerning personal and business economic damages.  Frankly,  I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Why do I do what I do
I am one of the fortunate people who like numbers;I love the logic of financial and economic work, as every number has a place and purpose.  There is nothing more exciting at work than receiving boxes full of client records as it means I will have sufficient data to do my work.  My favorite part of my job is the economic damages work.  I enjoy going through piles of paperwork, pulling out relevant data and creating a model that combines seemingly random data into information that is relevant and easily understood by attorneys, clients, juries, etc.  It feels good to be considered an expert and knowing that my work can help someone’s case.

What brought me to Reno or why I stay in Reno
I was born and raised in Russia until the age of twelve when my family moved to Stateline, in south Lake Tahoe for my father’s work.  I attended middle and high school in Stateline and then moved to Reno to attend the University of Nevada, Reno.  My husband is also from Lake Tahoe, so it was natural for us to stay in Reno after school.  Our families, who are very important to us, live in close proximity and we enjoy the area.  For me, Reno offers the right amount of outdoor activities and cultural events with a relatively small town atmosphere, which is perfect for my family.

What I do to leave work at the office
My husband and I have a rule that we each get half an hour each evening to talk about our work and the events of the day.  After that, no more talk about work.  It is not easy to not think about work, but it’s something we choose to do in order to enjoy our free time.

How I give back to my community
I have been given many opportunities and was lucky to have good mentors in both my personal and professional life, and I feel that it is my responsibility to give back to the community.  I am a member of the Nevada Women’s Fund;this year I am a member of the Salute to Women of Achievement Luncheon committee.  I like NWF’s commitment to the improvement of lives of women and children in the area, and I am honored to be able to donate my time and efforts to this cause.

I am also a charter member and Public Relations Chair of the Reno New Generations Rotary club, a new Rotary club format.  Ours is only the second club of this format in the United States.  Chartered in November of 2009, our club has performed a number of community services projects, raised funds for the Haiti earthquake relief fund, purchased Christmas gifts and supplies for local area clubs, and is planning a large fundraiser for the Shriner’s Children Hospital.

I am also a member of the Junior League of Reno, and I will be the Assistant Chair of the Marketing and Communications (MarCom) Committee for the upcoming year.  Junior League’s mission is to provide training and voluntarism opportunities for women.  Our current project is to build an accessible playground for children with disabilities.

I am also a member of a number of professional and networking organizations, including The Group, a local professional women’s organization that also participates in community support through fundraising for various local organizations, including the Crisis Call Center.

Best business book I’ve read lately
I recently read and enjoyed Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin.  While this is not a business book, the book’s lessons can be used in the business setting.  These lessons include putting aside personal interests and dislikes in order to work together for a common good.  The business world often brings together people of different backgrounds and with different goals and it’s important for everyone to work together despite these differences.

Best place in Reno to meet with clients or colleagues
Our offices are located in the Quail Corners Business Park off McCarran and Talbot.  For me the best and the most convenient place to meet clients or colleagues is The Grill at Quail Corners.  It has great food and a perfect business atmosphere.

My leadership philosophy
Many people learn and think differently and holding everyone to the same standard can undervalue some employees.  I think it is the job of a good leader to find the employee’s strengths and focus on these strengths in order for them to succeed.  I also think that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and respectfully, regardless of their standing in life.

My professional certifications including Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Forensic Financial Analyst (CFFA) and Accredited Valuation Analyst (AVA).  Member Golden Key National Honour Society, Beta Gamma Sigma, and Phi Kappa Phi.  Recipient of the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement award at the University of Nevada, Reno.  Married to my high school sweetheart.

If I could do something else, I would …
With no financial constraints, I would like to be a professional traveler, traveling the world and learning about other cultures.  Otherwise, I am very happy with my line of work; I am not sure there is anything else I would rather do.
