St. Louis, MO/ Minnesota: Boardwalk Gets A New Lease On Life Thanks To Helical Piers

Oct. 1, 2010 - PRLog -- The University of Minnesota Arboretum had a decaying boardwalk. Laying directly against the bog beneath it, the boards of the boardwalk were shifting and decaying at an alarming rate. Furthermore, the boardwalk needed to be widened to accommodate a heavier traffic flow. The boardwalk also needed to be raised to protect the new boardwalk from the freeze/thaw cycles of the bog below. PierTech® Helical piers were brought in to solve this problem.

All 1200 feet of boardwalk needed to be replaced, realigned, widened, and raised away from the surface of the bog. All of this needed to be accomplished without disturbing anything in, on, or below the bog. The boardwalk design required all work to be done in twelve foot sections.

The boardwalk was measured and piers were laid out in their proper places, according to the design specifications. The piers were then turned into the ground (with a drive head) through the old boardwalk. Once the piers were in place, the old boards were disposed of and support beams were implemented, at new measurements that would support a wider boardwalk. Old lumber was replaced with new, stronger, wider boards, now significantly raised from the surface of the bog, and therefore protected from the aggressive Minnesota freeze/thaw cycles.
