As Official Car Partner of the event, Škoda is supporting the tour with a fleet of 86 vehicles used by teams, VIPs and race directors. A broad range of Škoda models will be on show, from the sporty Octavia RS to the luxurious Superb.
The UCI Road World Championships are second only to the legendary Tour de France in terms of importance and prestige in international cycling and they will bring the best riders in the world to Australia. In 2010 a strong contingent of Australian riders will press for victory on home soil. The current Australian team is likely to include a host of potential winners, including Cadel Evans, Michael Rogers, Simon Gerrans and Allan Davis, to name but a few.
To add to the excitement, Evans will be riding for back to back World Championships in his “own backyard”. His home town of Barwon Heads is just 20 minutes from Geelong, where he will attempt to win the Men’s Road Race on 3 October 2010.
Škoda’s romance with cycling began in 1895 with the production of bicycles. While the brand has made the transition from bicycles to motorbikes and cars (since 1905), the relationship with cycling has remained strong.
Since 2004, Škoda has been dedicating its sponsoring to cycling as a main partner of Tour de France and also is the car partner of eight ProTour cycling teams. Škoda is currently the official car partner of the UCI which incorporates the UCI Road World Championships. On a local level, Škoda has been supporting the Tour Down Under for three years in a row now.
Head of Škoda Australia, Matthew Wiesner, elaborates on Škoda’s partnership with the UCI Road World Championships:
“Co-operating with major organisations and teams of the cycling world helps Škoda to understand the needs of the modern and active customer looking for intelligent solutions not only in their lifestyle but also when it comes to their choice of vehicle. We are committed to the continued support of cycling in Australia and are proud to be associated with such a high profile event which will generate unprecedented excitement in the history of the sport here in Australia.”
