Sept. 30, 2010 - PRLog -- San Diego has long been a thriving center for art and film of with festivals like FilmOut and the San Diego Asian Film Festival. Even so, the horror genre has been woefully neglected. This stigmatized, yet undeniably magnetic dark genre is finally getting a celebration of its own on Saturday, November 6th at the historic downtown 10th Ave Theater with the first annual Horrible Imaginings: Horror Film Festival of San Diego. “When I moved here, I found myself driving to Los Angeles to attend horror events and couldn’t help wondering why there weren’t any in San Diego,” says event creator Miguel Rodriguez, a recent transplant from Baltimore, Maryland who also runs the Monster Island Resort Podcast. “San Diego is rich in history and welcoming to the arts community—it’s only natural that things that go bump in the night should be embraced, as well!”

Since introducing the idea this summer, Miguel Rodriguez has received considerable encouragement and enthusiasm for the project from the arts community and from the neighborhood. Horrible Imaginings will showcase feature length and short independent films, as well as two rarely-screened classics: Michael Powell’s 1960 psychological classic Peeping Tom and Lucio Fulci’s surreal Italian horror The Beyond. Independent feature length submissions include Twisted Twins Productions’s Dead Hooker in a Trunk, Chris LaMartina’s President’s Day, and Elisabeth Fies’s The Commune.

In addition to the films, there will also be an art gallery featuring macabre or dark original artwork from several local artists, including Lovecraft-influenced Mike Dubisch, blacklight artist Nigel Brookes, and the art collective Aesthetigeist. The art gallery will span four floors of the 10th Ave Theatre during the horror film festival of San Diego. People will have the option to purchase inexpensive gallery tickets if they are only interested in the art gallery portion of the event.

The philosophy behind Horrible Imaginings: Horror Film Festival of San Diego goes beyond surface entertainment. There is a reverence for the genre that is immediately apparent in everyone involved in this project. “Fear and the human fascination with fear is something that has been a staple of storytelling since people had the ability to communicate with one another,” says Miguel Rodriguez, “horror has been a popular element in film since its inception, and I want to showcase different types of horror films. I believe the variety of subgenres that are included in horror is a testament to the creativity of the people who try to express fear in their art.” The all-day event will begin at 1:00 pm, and will continue until after midnight, with a rooftop after-party to follow.
