Follow on Google News | Downtown Clothing Drive to Collect Business Attire for Homeless Seeking EmploymentDowntown PRO clothing Drive now in fourth year.
By: Bruce Beck PRO was founded in 2007 by businessman and downtown resident Peter Davis, who realized that homeless men and women didn't always have appropriate clothes to go out on job interviews or for work in a formal business environment. PRO collects donated pre-owned and new mens' and womens' suits, dress shirts and slacks, blouses, skirts, ties, belts, and shoes and distributes them through area homeless assistance providers, Chrysalis and the Weingart Center, who have job training programs for their clients. Donated clothing is collected at various drop-off locations throughout Downtown LA. This year Downtown PRO has teamed up with LA's Department of Public Work's Bureau of Sanitation whose Second Chance week coincides with the clothing drive. Utilizing the department's outreach to more than 40,000 city employees will boost the amount of donated clothing. This year, additional collection boxes will be placed at city buildings including City Hall, LAPD's new administration building, and LAX. A kick-off event will be held at the Public Works Building on Tuesday, October 12 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Cynthia Ruiz, President of the Public Works Board and Enrique Saldivar, Director of the Bureau of Sanitation, and other Executives of the Bureau will be in attendance.
