TN Zoning is adopted in District del Sol

Riverview Economic Development Association (REDA) Celebrates the Adoption of Traditional Neighborhood (TN) Zoning in District del Sol on Saint Paul's West Side.

Sept. 29, 2010 - PRLog -- Saint Paul, MN- In a move collectively initiated by REDA, West Side Citizens Organization (WSCO) and Neighborhood Development Alliance (NeDA), TN Zoning has been implemented in the District del Sol commercial corridor and in the West Side neighborhood of Saint Paul.

The process was intensive and took 2 years to complete.  It included extensive community outreach and many one on one meetings between business owners and City of Saint Paul zoning officials to analyze the impact of zoning changes on specific business operations.

The new zoning district will allow for mixed use development of shops on the bottom and housing on top, which has been called for in several neighborhood based community plans. In addition, the zoning code includes design guidelines that will help to preserve the character of the main street. Features like windows along the street frontage, buildings oriented toward the sidewalk and corner of intersections, and landscaping that screens parking lots all aid in creating a main street experience that is comfortable for pedestrians.

"I have appreciated the community's support of the rezoning, especially the efforts of REDA in getting the word out, helping businesses understand the rationale for and potential impact of TN2 Zoning and seeing the community's vision for District del Sol become a reality.  Zoning is an important tool in securing a strong commercial core for the West Side."  Lucy Thompson from the office of Planning and Economic Development at the City of Saint Paul.
