How Long Does it Take to Recover in An Addiction Rehab?

Sept. 29, 2010 - PRLog -- Any form of addiction is basically a psychological problem that requires considerable amount of time, in most cases months, and in some cases even years to be able to completely recover from the effects of substance abuse. Enrolling into addiction rehab does not cure the problem of substance abuse; it is considered the first step to recovery. The period of recovery could even last for an entire lifetime owing to severity of the drug addiction and the tendency of the patient to fall prey to temptation easily.

It is a proven fact that no one can ever determine the exact time taken by a patient to recover from addiction. The period of recovery varies from person to person depending mostly on the mindset of the patient. When someone is addicted to abusing a particular substance especially alcohol or a mind altering drug, there is always a need for the detoxification of the patient. Detoxification is that period of treatment of addiction where the patient undergoes rigorous treatment for the effects the substance has had on the patient. Detoxification comprises of a mixed prescription of drugs depending on the severity of the substance abuse and the nature of the substance abuse. Detoxification can last from a week to a week and a half, this being one of the most important steps in the healing process. The patient has to avoid all the substances that he/she is being treated for at this period. Detox brings with it the most testing and excruciating period of withdrawal pains. Withdrawal is the physical manifestation of the detoxification period which kicks in within 24 hours of it. Withdrawal is that period where the patient owing to the excessive production of the receptors begins to crave for just one more hit of the drug or just one more drink. The manifestation of this period is intense and causes intense pain and suffering for the patient, resulting in aggressive behavior, diarrhea, convulsions, tremors, a sensation of bugs running all over the body and a sense of weakness and loss of vitality for life. This withdrawal period could last up to a week and it is important that during this period the patient does not have access to the drug at any cost.

Following this period of intense trauma and suffering is physical therapy where the importance of living a healthy life is stressed upon. This is generally done by giving physical exercise, nutritious food and a strict regiment of medical help for the patient to cope with the drug free life. But usually addiction rehab is not the end of the treatment, the patient should be more precautious after addiction rehab as now the patient is more vulnerable to having access to the substances or he/she could fall prey to newer harmful substances. So it is therefore not possible to exactly determine or put a label on the exact time taken by the patient to recover from drug addiction. But generally the period of treatment at an addiction rehab facility could last a month. A distinction needs to be made between treatment and sustainable recovery. While it may take a month or so for treatment which will rid the addict of his intense need for the drug, creating sustainable recovery is a long drawn out process in which the individual himself plays a central role of training and controlling himself not to give in to temptation ever again. This could be for life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyVMmOneCQk
