Sept. 29, 2010 - PRLog -- If you want a little adventure why not swim with penguins in the Cape Peninsula, near Cape Town, at Boulders Beach. A small municipal beach that is set apart from the main beaches where a penguin settlement resides, as a general rule people are not allowed contact with the penguins but that does not stop the penguins from sitting on your beach towel or darting around your legs while you take a refreshing dip in the Ocean. Penguins like to walk about and usually take no notice of fences. A walkway has been built around the dunes so you can get a great close up look at the whole colony breeding, eating, swimming, preening, and chatting away. And the water is not freezing like some beaches in the Cape. If your looking for holiday accomadation in this area please visit http://www.myholidayrental.com/search/place/cape-town
In fact the water is quite refreshing at the boulders and there will be loads of people swimming in the sea during the summer months. Boulders Beach is on the False Bay coast and its a little warmer than some of the other popular beaches around Cape Town. You can always rent a wetsuit and bring it down.
Nevertheless the bigger appeal is the little Boulders Beach about 700m south, where you are actually allowed on the beach this is also less well known, so less busy not that many coach parties visit there. In fine weather, it is such an outrageously idyllic setting that it might as well be out of Eden. The beach is small and bent like a horseshoe, and the sand is scattered with huge granite boulders. The penguins sit on and among the boulders and are not particularly bothered by the visitors just don’t get to close. The bay is extremely sheltered and the beach slopes very smoothly, so it is a perfect spot for kids and yourself to swim,
The penguins at Boulders Beach used to be called Jackass Penguins because of their characteristic mating call that sounds like a braying donkey. Because several South American penguins actually make the same noise, their name was changed to African Penguins. Unfortunately it is prohibited to handle the penguins, or feed them, but its easy to get just a few feet away from them. These are untamed penguins and they can get quite cantankerous especially when protecting their eggs. They do warn you that the Penguins have very sharp beaks and can cause grave injury if they bite or attack. Some people grumble about the smell when they visit the penguins at Boulders Beach. The smell is of no surprise since there are in the region of 3000 of these birds in a somewhat small area, going about their business.
