One of the easiest ways to get a child involved in moving is by giving them opportunities to express themselves. Allowing kids to do something as simple as draw a picture of how they might like their new room to look or permitting them to choose paint colors or a new bedspread can help them feel involved. Not only does this give them an outlet where they may feel they are contributing in some way, it helps create excitement about their new surroundings. Working side-by-side with your child to decorate their bedroom also opens doors for open and honest dialogue where you both may discuss their fears, excitement and the positive aspects of their transition.
A going-away party where your kids can invite their buddies is a great way to celebrate their friendships and demonstrate to children that these people will not be completely gone from their lives. At the party, your kids can create a ‘Friend’s Directory’ compiling contact information for all their friends and kids can write messages on a t-shirt or poster board so your child may have a keepsake to take to their new home.

If possible, bring your kids to their new home and town prior to moving so they can explore and get excited about their new playgrounds, zoos and movie theaters. Also, it is
a great idea to let your child visit their new school before starting classes. The team at Humboldt will work with you and your children to provide comfort and ease during a busy, transitional time.
