Cancer Diagnosis Spurs Optimistic Golden Opportunity

The dreaded Cancer diagnosis brings with it a “near death” experience, but it can also ignite an optimistic golden opportunity. See how this 51 year old woman who lost her hair and left breast to cancer found a new life path to own her own shop.

Sept. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- On Monday September 27, 2010 Dr. Russ released his weekly Dr. Russ Bussters.  “Bussters” as he calls them are designed to “Busst-UP” any pessimism standing in the way of accomplishing your weekly goals.  This week he starts with the fear the Big 'C.'  The dreaded Cancer diagnosis brings with it a “near death” experience, but which can also ignite an optimistic golden opportunity.

The "Bussters" are derived from the following Dr. Russ Buss quote:

   * “A major life crisis is a golden opportunity to do something with your life that you never would have done before that can bring your life new meaning well beyond what it might otherwise have ever had.” ~ A Dr. Russ Buss Bussterism.

The above quote is exemplified in the recent life story of Judy Hayward captured in the headline: “Cancer puts woman on path to her own shop.” (Lansing State Journal, Section B, page 1, September 27, 2010)

The life crisis part of the story read as follows:

   * A married, healthy, 51 year old woman with a good job in health care was diagnosed with cancer following a routine mammogram. Her left breast was removed followed by chemotherapy, hair loss, severe nausea, and low energy. She then underwent several surgeries to reconstruct her breast.

The Golden Opportunity was “the rest of the story” as Paul Harvey used to say:

   * As the crisis began to resolve and her energy returned, she thought she should go back to work or starting something new.  Surviving cancer had not only turned her long, straight blond hair into a new crop of brown curly locks that grew back in, but “turned me into a different person.”  Judy Hayward began saying to herself: “life is to short not to do the things you want to do.”

   * During the months of recovery she had begun to recall a "day-" or “pipe-” dream she had had from time to time about owning her own consignment shop.  In the past, thinking about such a possibility seemed impossible and she quickly erased it from her mind.  After working in the health care field since the age of 17, she heeded the call for change that she got from her Cancer and opened the Treasure Corner Consignment Boutique in Howell, Michigan.

Golden Opportunity Bussters Forged from a Life Crisis

  1. Don’t go looking to create a life crisis, but when one occurs and the crisis begins to resolve look around for that golden opportunity.
  2. Where to look, you ask?  Take a look in the “storage attic of the mind:” the place you keep all the memories of those delightful, enticing but seemingly useless day dreams about a different you – a previously impossible you!!!
  3. Whether you know it or not, everyone around you would love to help you out of your life crisis.  They want the happy and upbeat you back.
  4. So, talk about your dreams openly and, like Judy Hayward, you will be amazed at the help and support that is forthcoming.
  5. When you have the courage to make that detailed action plan for the new venture it will seem so much easier to take that first or next step.  Soon after Judy purchased computer software for running a consignment, read through a manual and started advertising for consignors the shop was up and running.
  6. Make sure the new venture is something you love.  Judy had always looked forward to spending her days off roaming through garage sales, resale shops and consignment venues.
  7. You do not have to know everything to get started.  She didn’t know anything about running a business.
  8. Carry a torch out of and onward from the life crisis.  While Judy’s shop carries clothing, designer purses, jewelry and furniture she also carries really inexpensive, but quality wigs for Cancer survivors.  (She paid $259 for her first wig; then found an on-line source at a cost of $50 to $60).
  9. About Cancer or for that matter any “life crisis:” She says: "It’s a battle you have to face; stay positive and you can win it."
