Sept. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- NASHVILLE - Kyzen, the world leading provider of environmentally responsible precision cleaning products for electronics and high-technology manufacturing operations, announces that Serge Tuerlings, Kyzen’s European Technical Manager is to co-present a paper entitled “Cleaning Prior to Conformal Coating” at the Industrial Workshop on Conformal Coating in Deurne, the Netherlands 16-18th November 2010. Highlights of this presentation is excerpted, please come to Deurne to hear the complete talk.

Mr. Tuerlings will focus on the fact that conformal coating has, in recent years, been implemented more and more within the electronics assembly industry. There are many reasons for this trend, but the ongoing miniaturization, the increased reliability requirements and the harsher environment in which electronics are a major cause of  why conformal coating is applied to ensure the protection of the electronic circuitry.

If we take the automotive industry as an example we can see that each car has a wide range of electronic devices covering one or more functions. There is nothing more annoying or even dangerous than a car malfunctioning. Cars need to operate in all environments: high (saline) humidity level and low temperature environments as well as in dry, high temperature circumstances.

In order to assure the functioning of the board, conformal coatings are frequently applied to protect the board from these harsh environments. Obviously the coating will not insulate the board from any temperature fluctuations but it will isolate it from humidity and other outside influences.

When one paints a surface, you need to make sure that it is free of any dirt or grease because the paint will not adhere to such dirty surfaces. Conformal coating is not that much different to paint. To assure the best possible adherence, the surface on which the conformal coating will be applied has to be free of any foreign bodies which could have a negative influence on the adherence. Such “foreign bodies” are flux residues from the soldering assembly.

By cleaning away the flux residues, the likelihood of having a perfect adherence of the coating on the assembly is increased dramatically. Removal of flux residues will also eliminate the risk factor of any chemical reaction, such electromigration and dendritic growth, under the coating. Other foreign bodies which need to be cleaned away are for example fingerprints, dust and other residues from previous assembly processes.

The presentation jointly given by some of the world-leading cleaning companies during the Industry Workshop to be held in Deurne, Netherlands in November will emphasize the importance of cleaning prior to the conformal coating process. The key to the success of this will be the choice of chemistry, equipment and process parameters.

It all begins with finding a cleaning process capable of fully removing the flux residues on the assembly. These are not only the apparent flux residues but also the residues underneath the components. The flux residues which are not completely removed from underneath low stand-off components can potentially create adherence and reliability issues. It is therefore vital to have these flux residues entirely removed in order to guarantee long term reliability of the assembly. Key parameters such as temperature, contact time and mechanical impact of the process will all influence the end results.

A collaboration between Kyzen and Zestron, the complete presentation will allow the participants attending the workshop to make the appropriate choices when implementing a cleaning process prior to conformal coating which will give them entire satisfaction.
