The smooth 3.5-liter V6 uses Honda's revolutionary i-VTEC system to adjust valve timing and lift for more power and efficiency. Variable Cylinder Management is a rare feature on such an advanced overhead cam engine, allowing the Pilot to judiciously deactivate cylinders and run as a four- or three-cylinder engine when possible to boost fuel efficiency. Fuel economy is 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for the two-wheel-drive Pilot with a four-wheel drive version paying a miniscule penalty and coming in at 16/22. A five-speed automatic transmission keeps the engine in the heart of its power band and the VTM-4 all-wheel drive system is fully automatic, putting torque where it needs to go, even on soupy surfaces. VTM also has a lock mode that operates in first and second gear at speeds below 18 mph to put the maximum torque on the ground in low-traction conditions.
The Pilot's Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure keeps everybody safe. The ACE structure directs crash forces around the cabin, as well as helping mitigate frontal collision danger. Standard Vehicle Stability Assist and full airbag coverage are teamed with active front seat head restraints. The Pilot's sharp handling, stiff structure with plenty of high-strength steel and athletic chassis with fully independent suspension aim to keep you out of trouble in the first place.
For 2011, Honda has sweetened the equipment selection pot and made the Satellite-Linked Navigation System, previously exclusive to the Pilot Touring, available on the EX-L. There's even an extra hidden storage compartment that can augment the space by securing its locking lid.
Both rows of rear seats fold down 60/40 to clear a full 87 cubic feet of flat-floored cargo capacity. A full load of passengers will appreciate the second row's sliding bench seat to ensure sufficient legroom in all positions. The Pilot is further family-friendly by being one of the few vehicles wide enough to allow the use of three LATCH-anchor seats across the second-row bench seat. An additional fourth bambino can be nestled into an additional LATCH position in the third row.
