Search Engines and how they work

Search engines are text driven.  Though the technology has advanced over the last many years however still search engine are mainly text driven.  Search engine crawl the web, look at the site content (mainly text) to get an idea about the site.

Search engine performs many activities in order to deliver the search results – crawling, indexing, processing, calculating relevancy and retrieving.


Crawling is the process by which search engine discovers new and updated content. Huge set of computers crawl billions of pages on the web.

Search engine uses an algorithmic process i.e. computer programs to determine which sites to crawl, how often, and how many pages to fetch from each site.


Indexing, after crawling the next step is indexing. Search engine processes each of the pages it crawls in order to compile a massive index of its own of all the words it sees and their location on each page. Information such as key content tags, attributes, such as Title tags and ALT attributes are all processed. Remember since the search engine technology is mainly text driven, the content inside rich media files still cannot be indexed.



Serving: when a user enters a query, search engine search their own index for matching pages and return the most relevant result to the user. In case of Google, relevancy is determined by over 200 factors.
