Background:

ITEP is launching a powerful literacy program for Gardena Global Leadership Academy (GGLA) that focuses on “adopting” the Chivas USA soccer team. Students will adopt one soccer player each, and throughout the course of the Fall semester, they will research statistics on that particular player, as well as write a report about the soccer player’s native country. The culmination will be the chance to meet their soccer players in person at the October 23, 2010 Chivas USA game at the Home Depot Center. This game will also be a fundraiser for GGLA, with the first 100 ticket buyers receiving a free Chivas hat and a VIP backstage pass to meet the players.

Club Deportivo Chivas USA is an American soccer club based in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson, California, that participates in Major League Soccer. The club, founded in 2004, plays its home games at The Home Depot Center, sharing it with fellow MLS club the Los Angeles Galaxy. The official colors of C.D. Chivas USA are red, white, and blue, the same as parent club C.D. Guadalajara, one of the most widely-supported and successful teams in Mexico. In Spanish, chivas means goats, and is the nickname of CD Guadalajara.
