If you decide to get your marriage license from a County office remember that  you must make an appointment first. Each of these offices keep normal business hours and are closed on weekends and holidays.

There are two types of Marriage Licenses: Non-Confidential and Confidential.

To obtain a Non-Confidential Marriage License the individuals getting married are  required to present a valid photo ID with date-of-birth information (and it is also recommended that they have certified copies of their birth certificates which can speed up the license process).

It is not a requirement to be a resident of California and no blood test is required.

Any name changes are entirely up to the couple and should be determined prior to the application process.

If either one of the couple has been granted a Divorce or filed a Termination of Domestic Partnership within 90 days of applying for their Marriage License, official documentation must be presented to the County Recorder or persons assisting in the licensing.

Once you have your Marriage License it is valid for 90 days and you may have any authorized minister or officiant perform your wedding ceremony anywhere in the State of California. After the ceremony, the Marriage License must be returned to the San Diego County office for recording.  When you have Shades of You, San Diego Wedding Services perform your wedding they can handle all requirements related to your marriage license. You or anyone else may request certified copies of your Marriage License 7 days after it is returned to the County Recorder's office.

Currently, San Diego County Non-Confidential  Marriage License fees are $50.00.

A Confidential Marriage License has the same requirements (photo ID and both individuals being present) as a non-confidential one but  also requires a sworn written statement attesting to the couple already living together. With a San Diego County Confidential Marriage license, the marriage ceremony can only take place within San Diego County.

Only the married couple can request copies of their marriage certificate (except by court order). If for any reason a copy is required, the county will only release it to the named individuals of the married couple.

Currently, San Diego County Non-Confidential Marriage License fees are $55.00.
