Experienced International Squash Pro Will Join ORC Ranks this October

David Heath to become new Squash Director at Mississauga’s leading family health, wellness and sports club

Sept. 23, 2010 - PRLog -- Mississauga, September 22 2010:    Scottish squash player and international Squash Coach, David Heath will be joining Ontario Racquet Club (ORC) this October.  With a solid background of playing and international coaching experience and results, David is expected to make a significant contribution to ORC’s squash program and to the sport in general in this area.

David has played and coached extensively in Great Britain, Europe, South Africa, and North and South America.  In his own words, David is looking forward to “the challenge of running and building the program at ORC.  After playing semi professionally in Europe for the past few years I am ready to focus my attention completely on helping others learn, improve and achieve their own personal goals in squash.”

David will be joining ORC this October as the Club’s second international director of sport, giving ORC’s staff credentials a further boost following the arrival of highly qualified and experienced Tennis Director, South African Gary Muller earlier this year.   General Manager Jeff McCarrol is excited about David Heath’s appointment as Squash Director and what it will mean for the club.  “We have seen what having an experienced international pro like Gary Muller around has done for our tennis program—we anticipate that David’s contribution to our Squash program will be significant and give the sport a real boost.”

No other club in the area can boast as impressive a pro line-up; something McCarrol believes will keep the club and ORC Academy Squash and Tennis programs successful well into the future.

Playing Experience

A member of the Scottish National Team from 1996-2002, David Heath represented Scotland in four European Championships, two World Championships and in the 1998 Commonwealth Games. He was also the winner of several professional events worldwide, and has had victories over several players ranked in the World’s top 50 in tournament and league play.

David was a Scottish Universities squash champion in 1994 and 1995.  He captained two Scottish University Teams to victory in 1995, earning him University “Blues” in squash from both Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities.

Coaching Experience

As a coach, David has worked with players of all ages and abilities, from top level junior and senior players to players just starting out in the game.  David has coached many nationally and internationally top-ranked senior and junior players and teams in several countries.  His proudest achievement as a coach is observing the juniors he has worked with “grow as players and individuals, support each other as a team, behave respectfully towards others and have fun on court.”

In 2009-2010 when David coached the Liechtenstein junior team they won more medals than any other on the Swiss Junior Circuit.  He was also the National Coach of Liechtenstein’s Gold medal-winning Men’s and Silver medal-winning Women’s Teams in the 2002 European Small Nations Championships.

From 2003 to 2005, David worked in the United States as Assistant Coach of the Dartmouth Men’s Team who finished 5th in the US end-of-season college ranking list in 2003-2004, and of Dartmouth Women’s Team who finished 5th in 2004-2005.  David was National Coach of the Peruvian Men’s Team which finished 7th in the Pan-American Games of 1999—this was Peru’s best ever performance.

David’s range of playing, coaching and administrative experience in the sport will make him a definite asset to the ORC team.  He is also a qualified and experienced High School teacher and motivational speaker.

David intends to build a vibrant squash program at ORC where everyone feels welcome, regardless of their age or personal circumstances:  “I hope I can help bring across to others my passion for the game of squash and the physical and mental well-being that can be gained from working hard and learning to master the various elements of the game and from adopting an active lifestyle.

Squash has been a big part of David’s life since he was ten years old—and he still thinks it’s a great game!  “I feel I have learned so much through squash, about overcoming hurdles and dealing with success and failure, about the value of hard work and discipline, about learning to express myself freely and without fear and about how good and consistent training can redefine the concepts of mental and physical limitations. Squash has also given me the opportunity to visit and live in many places around the world and that has helped to broaden my horizons and shape me as a person, hopefully mainly for the better.”
