Follow on Google News | Copy Cat Victim Smokie Lucky She Was Chipped With PetlogSix-month-old kitten Smokie, who was found in a bin at a recycling centre in Hull last week, was successfully reunited with his owners because he was microchipped just weeks earlier.
By: The Kennel Club When Smokie was found by staff at the recycling centre, they contacted Hessle Dog Rescue who collected him and took him to a vet where he was scanned and identified. Mrs Hirons said: “If I hadn’t had Smokie microchipped then I may never have known what had had happened to him, and we may never have been reunited. Because I was contacted so quickly, we were reunited within hours of Smokie going missing. After all that has happened to him, it is great to have him back home - he is very happy to be back too.” Unlike collars and tags that can fall off or be removed, microchips are a form of permanent identification. When a lost pet is found, a scanner can pick up if they are chipped and will help trace their owners. Petlog, which is owned and managed by the Kennel Club, is on hand 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to animal wardens, welfare and rescue centres, veterinary practices and local authorities, who can all scan for microchips in pets which come into their care and trace the owners through the Petlog database. Having a microchip implanted in your pet vastly increases a pet’s chances of getting home. Pet owners have a legal requirement to ensure that their pet is under their control and this includes some form of proper identification. Petlog provides a range of services for owners of microchipped pets; for further information, please visit www.petlog.org.uk or call 0844 4633 999.
