With Wales’ premier new music event, SWN Festival, returning in October for its fourth year, Ignite Cardiff organisers Claire Scantlebury and Neil Cocker are thrilled to be holding a special ‘music’ themed Ignite event in Chapter Arts Centre as part of the festival line-up.

Ignite is a fast-paced, dynamic event which allows speakers to talk on any subject for 5 minutes - sound simple? Well what makes Ignite talks different and challenging is that speakers only have 20 slides that automatically rotate every 15 seconds to get their message across!  As Ignite Cardiff have teamed up with SWN Festival, all the talks are going to be music themed and  so far confirmed speakers include BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and local hip hop legend Ruffstylz. Talk topics range from Bollywood to One-Hit-Wonders and music T-shirts.

‘We really wanted to feature Ignite at this year's SWN festival. Ignite will follow our first day of music themed seminars and talks at SWN, making a perfect end to the day for those who have been in Chapter for the day, and a nice start to the evening for those going to the live shows at Chapter that night.’ says SWN festival organiser John Rostron.

‘As SWN festival keeps growing it’s great to be able to bring in and involve more groups and ideas such as Ignite which contribute so much to the culture and industry in Wales all year round.’

For the Ignite Cardiff team, who were responsible for holding the first Ignite event in the UK back in December 2008, the reasons for getting involved with the SWN Festival are endless:

‘We think that the SWN Festival is such a fantastic event for Cardiff and we’re really excited to be part of it.’ explains Claire Scantlebury, co-organiser of Ignite Cardiff ‘SWN really raises the city’s profile and does wonders for getting new and unsigned bands in front of a new audience. ‘

Neil Cocker agrees, ‘For me, being part of SWN Festival both by holding Ignite and as one of the festival sponsors through Dizzyjam, means that I get to contribute to something great that I believe is only going to go from strength to strength in years to come’.
Entry is free to Ignite Cardiff 5 and you don’t need a ticket to attend, however the evening is expected to be busy so if you want to go along you’re advised to get there early.  The event will be starting at 5pm on Friday 22 October.

Notes to the Editors
Ignite Cardiff brings people from the creative, business and tech communities together to listen to short presentations about everything from wine to zombies, and programming languages to wifi. The talks are funny, inspiring, insightful and only ever 5 minutes long. Each speaker has to do a presentation consisting of exactly 20 slides, each auto-forwarding after exactly 15 seconds. This makes for a snappy, lively (and sometimes nerve-wracking!) talk.

Ignite Cardiff was founded and is run voluntarily by Claire Scantlebury and Neil Cocker, who also organise TEDxCardiff.

Ignite Cardiff at SWN will take place on the evening of 22nd October at Chapter Arts Centre and is free to attend. For more information check out www.ignitecardiff.net, @ignitecardiff, or find us on Facebook.

SWN promotes and celebrates new music coming in and out of Wales. It means ‘Sound’ and is pronounced ‘soon’.

SWN put on gigs and events all year round, predominantly in Wales, from their base in Cardiff, which is where they host the annual three day SWN Festival from where this all began. They curate stages at other festivals and events when they’re invited too, sometimes bringing a Welsh flavour to an event, sometimes introducing new UK and international bands, sometimes bringing music to a non-music event. They’ve worked with events and organizations such as In The City, Camden Crawl, Stag & Dagger, Sounds From The Other City (Salford), HowTheLightGetsIn, Cardiff Admiral Big Weekend (and Cardiff Council), The Pierhead Sessions and FFresh (both via The Festivals Company), Artes Mundi (and the National Museum Cardiff) and Square Festival.

Ignite was started in Seattle in 2006 by Brady Forrest and Bre Pettis. Since then hundreds of 5 minute talks have been given across the world. There are thriving Ignite communities in Seattle, Portland, Paris, and NYC and it is an internationally recognised format for producing dynamic, high energy and engaging presentations, with topics as wide ranging as “How to produce a low-budget horror movie”, “Did today’s architecture cause the financial crisis” and “How to use public transport without going mad”. http://ignite.oreilly.com/.
