Perth Doors Open Day And Fair Maids House Update

Sept. 22, 2010 - PRLog -- Now the house itself will not actually be open to the public because of ongoing construction work but the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s (RSGS) headquarters next door at Lord John Murray House will be to fill the public in on their big plans for the Fair Maids House.

The RSGS is an educational charity established in 1884 which promotes an understanding of the natural environment and human societies, and how they interact – making the connections between people, places and the planet and inspiring positive change.

The RSGS is currently in the process of reviving the Fair Maid’s House, which has been largely closed for the past 15 years, developing it and the newer building that links it to the RSGS’s headquarters in Lord John Murray House into a wonderful public education and exhibition facility, a new public home of geography in Scotland, to promote education, understanding and enjoyment of geographical and environmental topics to a wide audience.  The Fair Maid’s House will be sympathetically restored, and the ‘link’ building will be extended upwards and to the rear, in a ‘light-touch’ architectural design which will create lots of naturally-lit exhibition space.

According the RSGS they plan to open the new centre in Easter 2011, work on the Fair Maid’s House is progressing well, and construction is expected to finish in late October or early November, a little behind the original schedule because of under-pinning required on the existing old wall. RSGS Chief Executive, Mike Robinson, has said “By opening the Fair Maid’s House to the public for the first time in many years, we will be making Perth’s history and heritage accessible to tourists and inhabitants, and will be initiating new educational ventures through the storytelling room, collections area and education room. Come along on Doors Open Day and volunteers and staff will be happy to fill visitors in on the society’s plans.”

Perth and Kinross Doors Open Day 2010 is from Saturday 25th to Sunday 26th of September, Lord John Murray House will be open to the public from 10:30am to 1pm on Saturday 25th September for visitors to learn about the society and plans for the Fair Maids House.
