Elizabeth, a first grade teacher at Brown Elementary School, was sold the winning ticket by Craig Hubble, Vice Chairperson of the Lory’s Place Advisory Board. The first prize winners were Dr. Craig and Cherie Okonski. They won a Whirlpool Duet Washer and Dryer. The raffle is limited to 200 tickets that cost $100 each. The proceeds from this fundraising effort support Lory’s Place outreach programs and community education to raise awareness of the needs of children suffering from unresolved grief. Peer support groups at Lory’s Place as well as eleven local schools are made possible from fundraising activities such as this. Community funds help to provide Lory’s Place services to hundreds of participants from Allegan, Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties in Michigan, as well as from Elkhart and South Bend in Indiana. In 2009, 658 grieving children and adults participated in peer support groups at Lory’s Place, 530 children were supported through school outreach groups, and 957 people were served through walk-in visits, phone, email, outreach education, and crisis response. Lory’s Place, a Grief Healing Center of Hospice at Home, provides tools to help children and adults cope with death, begin the healing process and ultimately adjust to the new normal of life in the healthiest way possible. Since opening on November 15, 2004, hundreds of children from Allegan, Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties in Michigan, as well as from Elkhart and South Bend in Indiana, have taken the courageous step of accessing the bereavement resource services of Lory’s Place. With professional staff and trained volunteers, Lory’s Place provides regularly scheduled age-appropriate support group sessions, resources, and education. The services are free to all who need them.
