Sept. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- Expressive Beauty, Inc., one of the Nation’s leading sellers of human hair extensions and natural hair care products is launching a “Keep It Natural” campaign. Expressive Beauty is urging women within the African American community to understand the ill effects of using harsh chemicals on their hair, and the importance of using natural hair care products.

During Chris Rock’s documentary, “Good Hair”, a three year old toddler is asked why she would recommend other children to receive a hair relaxer. Her response was, “because you’re supposed to get a perm.” Is this the status quo when thinking of hair care within the African-American community? Should receiving a hair relaxer be the norm?

A substantial amount of African American women use chemical relaxers that contain Sodium Hydroxide, the same additive used in over the counter drain cleaners. These hair relaxers do the job desired of consumers, it relaxes their hair to a silky texture, but it comes with serious undesired repercussions. When using hair relaxers, the chemical solution is allowed to sit on the hair for an extended amount of time. During this duration, the chemicals strip off the natural oils and moisture of the hair. Causing the natural proteins to be removed, and also making the hair extremely dry and brittle. Hair relaxers have a damaging effect on overall hair health. It robs hair of the oils and essential proteins needed to keep hair strong. Excessive use of chemical hair relaxers will cause extreme breakage and possible irreversible hair loss.

Expressive Beauty’s “Keep It Natural” campaign will provide important facts about natural hair care, natural hair care products, and also shed light on the importance of having naturally healthy hair. Having natural healthy hair is here to stay. From the women that like to wear afros and twists to braids strong enough to hold a machine or micro weft extension. We believe that women should see their desire to add a flare of human hair extensions as a replacement to relaxing their hair.

While promoting natural hair care, Expressive Beauty, Inc. has also teamed up with non for profit organization Project M.A.T.E, Inc and will donate a portion of all proceeds made from the sale of natural hair care products. Project M.A.T.E, Inc (Minority Advancement Through Entrepreneurship), is an organization that promotes the importance of entrepreneurship to teens within the minority community.

Expressive Beauty founder and CEO, Amber Akins states, “We as a company feel deeply about both of these issues; natural hair care and entrepreneurship. It is pleasing to know that we can educate the minority community about the importance of taking care of their hair while also supporting an organization that is positively impacting our youth.”
