Sept. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- Residents at Blagdon Village will be celebrating the government-backed Older People's Day 2010 by doing - nothing different.

The theme of this year's dedicated event on Friday 1st October is 'getting and staying active in later life' with the emphasis squarely on persuading the over 60s to discover for themselves the benefits of physical activity.

That's something the residents of Blagdon Village, an age exclusive community in Taunton, Somerset already know, understand and enjoy.

Between them the 120 over 60s boast a wide array of skills, knowledge and interests. And, as the village has become not only established within the community but a community in its own right, a whole host of groups and activities have been started reflecting those hobbies.

"We have a fitness room here for those residents who want to exercise seriously but other than that all the activities have been organised by the residents themselves,” said Mike Pettet, who has lived in the village for almost two years. “Someone will mention they’re interested in learning a new skill, picking up an old hobby or just continuing a long-held interest and before you know it they’ve been joined by others and a group has been formed.”

There are currently 17 interest groups, many of which are held in the village's communal facilities - the bar, restaurant or multi-function room for instance. They range from quiz nights to art classes, bell ringing to poetry groups. Then there’s the more energetic country dancing and line dancing groups – and the on site putting green.

“There are plenty of facilities in the wider community too,” said Mr Pettet. “Some residents go to the local swimming pool for the ‘oldies session’, several keen golfers use the local courses and a few residents bowl regularly at Taunton Bowling Club. Some have joined a local walking group while others walk together from the village.

"Taking part in any activity keeps the grey matter working, makes you feel better physically and is a great way to meet friends. Being part of something is a good feeling."

To find out more about the type of activities available at Blagdon Village, read the residents diary at http://www.retirementvillages.co.uk/Village-Living/BLAGDO... or call us on 01823 336192.

Blagdon Village comprises 85 independent living cottages, bungalows and apartments for people aged 60 and over grouped around Blagdon Lodge, the central club house which is home to the communal facilities.

* UK Older People’s Day is a national celebration of the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society and to the economy.
