Sept. 19, 2010 - PRLog -- FINALLY… SOLUTIONS TO THE STRESS (CORTISOL) AND WEIGHT EPIDEMICS

Something needs to be done about the enormous stress & obesity epidemics, which many times are inter-connected; and one Canadian Registered Nutritionist and Lifestyle Expert is taking on the challenge to make a difference.

Mary-Anne MacPherson, President of Creating Infinite Success, now consults on nutrition and lifestyle strategies, something that became her passion after being bedridden with a debilitating illness. She offers private sessions in person or by telephone, to assist individuals in creating a more balanced lifestyle using holistic health strategies.

Many people need to reduce weight to live a healthier life. 1/3 of North Americans are either over-weight or obese. It is correlated to Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, gall bladder surgery, as well as breast and colon cancer. It’s staggering to understand that 300,000 deaths are related to obesity. How’s that for stressful?

The most dangerous type of overweight issue is having excess belly fat, so it’s important to create a lifestyle that reduces the abdominal fat as well as getting to the ideal healthiest weight, while of course, reducing any stressors. When stressed, the cortisol receptors in the gut area block the body from releasing weight. It is becoming well-known that excess belly fat is a health risk.

However, it’s a lifestyle that needs addressing, not a short-term starvation diet. As we all well know, most who partake in short-term “diets” end up regaining all the weight they released, plus a few more pounds. With specific strategies and lifestyle changes, clients see positive results.

The statistics related to stress are staggering. Depending on the various research studies, it is estimated that between 80-95% of Doctors visits are stress-related. The physical repercussions may be found in the heart disease, diabetes and cancers that are prevalent in our society. Chronic stress may also lead to hypertension, eating disorders, depression and a susceptibility to other more common physical illnesses.

The Word Health Organization has identified job-related stress as a world-wide epidemic. Statistics Canada calculates $12 million to be the annual cost of work time lost to stress. Other less obvious results of workplace stress are anger, hopelessness and frustration. 34% of Canadians who have health plans in place have felt so overwhelmed by their demands that they became physically ill. Only 32% of wellness initiatives are currently being offered in stress management arenas in corporate settings.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects 5.2 million adults and approximately 30% of war veterans. Many people affected by this disorder are not aware of having it and believe they are affected by the usual stressors of their hectic lives. PTSD is the re-experiencing of a past traumatic event throughout their day, nightmare experiences or during a flashback. It could be distress over current events that resemble or symbolize the initial trauma. It is difficult for those dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder to feel vital, joy and present in their daily lives.

Let’s not forget our youth. The National Institute of Mental Health sited that suicide was the 3rd leading cause of death among young people aged 15-24 years of age. A study was performed to identify how stress was significant in determining the teen suicidal tendencies. It was sad to see that 32.8% said they felt that no one cared or understood them; 30.4% felt like they were falling apart and going to pieces; 29.4% felt hopeless about their future; 27.8% stated that they felt useless and not needed and 23.9% felt that there was no one to turn to when things were at their worst. No wonder that 16% felt that life was not worth living and 11.9% had been thinking of ways to kill themselves.

The incidents of abuse are also prevalent in our society; physical, emotional, sexual and religious. Millions of people are indulging in stress and comfort foods as one their coping tools, and it’s showing up as excess weight as well. Instead of dealing with feelings, they hurt themselves by stuffing themselves with low-glycemic, low-fiber carby foods in order to avoid their emotional pain. This is so destructive yet many people use this because they don't know how else to deal with life’s stressors, especially if it happened years ago, perhaps in their childhood.

MacPherson is an expert with the mind-body connection, helping clients to understand which “hungers” are physical nutritional issues and which are emotional ones. The nutritional piece is diagnosed through a "web-based nutritional and lifestyle analysis", done in the comfort of a person’s home. After rooting out the physical imbalances, nutritional deficiencies and/or toxicities, she works on the emotional and lifestyle issues.

She also teaches cellular learning to those who are ready to take their health to their next level. Cellular learning teaches clients at a transformational level, creating the paradigm shift necessary for permanent lifestyle change. The work she offers focuses on 6 areas of health: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, financial and social. It’s an interactive learning experience where clients come away feeling revitalized because they now have tangible tools for transforming their life on all levels. This is what makes her consulting style a popular solution for those interested in learning practical strategies to reduce the stress in their lives, from the inside out.

MacPherson has a passion for not only teaching individuals; she is also interested in working in Corporate Settings to assist in work-place stress. Mary-Anne offers several health seminars, but indeed the most in-depth is her “Stress Free for Life” transformational training, which embraces the many components of a healthy lifestyle; physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.

As the nutrition component is incorporated into her seminars, it is a deductible expense under “medical expenses” on income tax returns. Or, participants who have coverage for a Registered Nutritional Consultant from their place of work or insurance company may be reimbursed through this avenue. This is also an important training for practitioner’s who need upgrading hours to maintain their designation. Stress is showing up in many areas and all practitioners in any health and healing environment are dealing with its debilitating effects.

MacPherson is a Registered Nutritional Consulting Practitioner, Life Coach, Reiki Master, Professional Speaker and a Member of the International Organization of Nutritional Consultants.
