Divorce can throw up  some weird and wonderful  stories,  Take for instance  Michelle Young who is in the process  of  asking for £400 million pounds  in divorce settlement  but also claiming  housing benefit as her estranged  husband has yet to grant  her a penny.

Although former fashion  designer Michelle was  going to  be given £27000 as an  stop gap, her soon to be ex  husband decided to  make himself bankrupt.

Now she  is unable to  finance the continuation of her  legal action to part Mr Young from his money .  She owes over  500 thousand pounds in  solicitor fees.

This bitter  fight which is over three years in the  public eye is likely to run and run as he  maintains the fortune  she seeks “has gone” and she vows  to fight for what is  rightfully hers.

Conveyancing

Smaller legal   businesses where the majority of their  incomes are conveyancing based are under  pressure.  In the past  couples could choose any law  firm to  undertake their conveyancing but now lenders  including Lloyds have 'lender's lists' of approved  conveyancing businesses  from which the buyer has to choose .  Those  conveyancing firms who are not on the lender  lists are going to  lose out.  As Lloyds control  33% of all lending, the   monetary impact for conveyancing  businesses of not making it onto the lender  list  would be  serious and could lead to closure .

Personal Injury

An action  against Marks & Spencer this week brings into sharp  relief the issues facing public access retail  and the  potential of personal injury.  A woman who slipped  on a wet floor in Marks & Spencer in  Scotland was awarded  £7,500 in compensation.  The woman  who was in her  70s did not see the  puddle of water near a chiller  cabinet and her fall resulted in a  fractured hip and permanent  damage.  M&S tried  to argue that the woman  had been careless  in her actions but the court  found in favor of the  woman.
