Sept. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- One of Vancouver Islands’ favourite Singer-Songwriters, Birgit Kuit, is back with her new independent album entitled “I Feel A River.” This is Birgit’s third album, and is the culmination of over a year of recording, with production handled by John Greenberg at Eastside Westside Studio in Port Alberni, BC and features 12 tracks, all written by Kuit.

A series of shows to accompany the release of ‘I Feel A River’ are scheduled, including the official CD release party at the Capitol Theatre in Port Alberni on October 23rd, Caffe Fantastico in Victoria on October 28th, The Duncan Garage Showroom in Duncan on  November 4th and Trees Organic Coffee House in Vancouver on November 5th.

Music has not always come easily to Birgit, who as a teenager, was teased and discouraged from following her musical aspirations.  “I didn’t sing or play guitar at all for years” says Birgit of that difficult period in her life.  “I was really drawn inside of myself musically for a long time.”  A change of heart happened while at the party of a friend’s one night.  “Someone started to play the piano, and the next thing I knew, everyone was singing” says Kuit.  “It felt right, so I joined in.  When we all finished, the woman playing the piano, whom I didn’t know at the time, turned to me and said ‘You were fantastic!  You should join my choir’.  Turns out she was the director of the Comox Valley Choir.  It was the spark that set me off on my musical journey.”

From this experience, Birgit has learned to stick with the idea of being true to her calling as an independent artist, working unrelentingly on her music, playing shows, and, as she likes to put it, “working to inspire others to believe in and achieve what is normally not thought possible”.  And her hard work is paying off.  She has been selected twice in 1999 and 2001 from over 1000 applicants by the BC Festival of the Arts to be a delegate in a group of BC songwriters who show promise for a professional career in songwriting, and was invited to sing at the V-Day benefit show at Madison Square Gardens with Chloe Goodchild – an event that also featured Queen Latifah and Joan Osborne.  She won a spot at New Music West in 2004, and was a featured artist at Honey Jam, in Toronto in 2008, which among many other successful women artists, counts Nelly Furtado as an alumni.
