Going From Carpet To Hardwood Flooring In Cincinnati, Ohio

Sept. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- SO LETS EXAMINE WHAT IS UNDER THE CARPET …..

I got a pair of pliers out of the truck and went to a corner in the family room and grasped the carpet and gently pulled it off the tackstrip to see what lies underneath. I found that there was 2 1/2 ” strip flooring that was installed when the home was built in the 1950′s. The rubber carpet cushion was somewhat stuck to the floor and when I lifted it up the waffle design of the pad and part of the rubber was embedded in the wood. So to turn this into a new refinished wood floor the carpet and tackstrip would have to be removed, then the pad would need to be scrapped up. Then a refinisher could come in, fill in any voids in the wood, like nail holes where the tackstrip was installed and sand the floor to ready the floor for stain. There are many colors of stain that could be applied. Most 2 1/2 ” wood strip floors are red oak so a stain color that is compatible with this oak would be recommended. After staining 2-4 coats of urethane should be applied to protect the finish and provide easy maintenance. There are various types of urethane finishes: water based,etc.

COST OF FLOORING FINISH WORK …..
A job like this where 63 sy’s of carpet is required would take approx. 3-4 days to sand, stain and urethane the floor. Cost depending on the mechanic would be $1500 to $3750 for labor and materials. Evacutating the dust from sanding should be a factor in deciding who does the work. There are machines that can do this at a higher cost of course.
New wall to wall carpet figured out to be $1765 installed with 1/2 8 lb. cushion.

The customer decided to go with carpet because of the warmth and comfort. Her steps and landing were finished wood so carpet will complement the wood beautifully. She was also concerned about sound and cold winters. I have found that many consumers usually buy several area rugs to install over the finished wood.
