Detroit, MI – The first annual Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge in October of 2009 was a huge success. The Challenge was created by the NSSF to provide a series of high level athletic events for the HBCU athletes that offer the ability to showcase individuals and teams while providing social communication opportunities and coaching knowledge exchange.
Dr. Robert Shumake’s generous support provided travel grants to teams participating in the event and scholarships to the winning male and female schools.
Robert Shumake also contributes to the NSSF Travel Fund Program which enables school athletes to attend the Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Relays, also known as “The Showdown in Motown.” The Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Relays is a large track and field event that highlights both athletic ability and academic achievement while students compete to earn college scholarships.
Interest in the Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge has been outstanding and the reaction from HBCU coaches is also encouraging. Robert Shumake expects teams from more than 30 historically black colleges and universities (HBCU), to register for the 2nd annual HBCU Challenge.
Registration for both races is now open and eligible teams of up to seven runners from colleges, universities and running clubs, or individuals may register at www.headcountreg.com/
Robert S. Shumake, CEO of Inheritance Capital Group and founder of the Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Relays and the Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge, ran track while in high school in Detroit and credits the training for track and field events with his current success.
