Follow on Google News | The Holy Hexagon CityA look at the town of Grosseto: it's religious structures, history about Saint Lawrence and the cities wall.
By: VacationRentalPeople A key monument of the city is the Grosseto Cathedral, which is dedicated to Saint Lawrence. He was one of the deacons of ancient Rome who was in charge of helping the poor and the needy, but it was during the third century when Christianity was outlawed, and by the decree of Emperor Valerian Pope Saint Sixtus II and six deacons, one of which was Lawrence, were ordered to be beheaded. The Cathedral itself was built on the remains of the Church of Santa Maria in the 15th century, although work on it begun in the 12th century it was delayed due to the wars with Siena. The Cathedral was partly restored in the 16th century with the bell tower being finished at the beginning 15th century and restored at the beginning of the 20th century. The Cathedral is the main religious building of the city. There are loads of other structures around the city if you want to see more religious buildings then there are quite a few you can visit in the city centre, such as Church of San Francesco, Convent of Clarisse and Church of San Pietro. These are just a few of the many you can find near the city centre, also there are also some churches outside of the city centre as well like the church of San Giovanni or Basilica of the sacred Heart of Jesus. Around the city there is something to marvel at - and that is the city walls. The walls you see today were reconstructed by Francesco I de Medici in 1574, but they were put up originally to protect and defend the city as well as to build a stronghold to protect the southern border. The walls were originally built in the 12th century but every century they has been destroyed numerous times. On each corner of the hexagon is a five sided bastion that looks like an arrow, and at the top of these are remnants of the guard rooms that are still in good condition structure wise. There was a ditch that surrounded the outer parts of the walls, but they are now part the public gardens that surround the wall. In the north east section of the walls is the Medicean Fortress. Grossoto is a place that definitely is a good place to go if you want to see various different religious structures – there are dozens of churches in the city and various other place that relate to religion.
