Today the IAQ Video network released the 5th in a series of public outreach videos meant to educate families about important indoor air quality issues. Five important videos have been produced in the last month covering everything from IAQ in schools to the dangers from inhaling formaldehyde in indoor environments.
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. It is the emission of high-energy alpha particles during the radon decay process that increases the risk of lung cancer. When radon decay products are inhaled and deposited in the lungs, the alpha emissions penetrate the cells of the epithelium lining the lungs.
The EPA, the National Cancer Institute and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that thousands of lung cancer deaths per year are attributable to radon. Lung cancer is presently the only commonly accepted disease risk associated with radon. Since 1988, the EPA and the Office of the Surgeon General have recommended that homes below the third level be tested.
“The EPA estimates that as many as six million homes throughout the country have elevated levels of radon,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network. “Some estimates state the number of deaths attributable to radon at about 21,000 per year in the U.S. alone. We hope this video helps educate families about the dangers associated with radon and what can be done to make their property safe.”
