Ignatius Press offers significant works by and about Cardinal Newman, whom Pope Benedict XVI will beatify on Sept. 19 during his visit to the United Kingdom

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 14, 2010 – Pope Benedict XVI will beatify Cardinal John Henry Newman on Sept. 19 – the last day of the Pope’s visit to the United Kingdom. Organizers expect a crowd approaching 70,000 – including as many as 1,000 priests – to attend the beatification ceremony, which will be held in Birmingham’s Crofton Park.

“Cardinal Newman’s beatification is an historic occasion for English Catholics,” said Ignatius Press President Mark Brumley. “It also holds significance for millions of Catholics in America, although that fact is not quite so well known as his role in English Catholicism.

“As the father of the Catholic Revival in the English speaking world, Newman’s influence on Catholicism in the United States is immense and can scarcely be overstated,” said noted author and Newman scholar Joseph Pearce. “In theology, philosophy, education and literature, Newman has enriched and enlightened the Catholic Church in America.”

Ignatius Press is one of the world’s leading sources for writings by and about Cardinal Newman. As the world awaits his beatification, American Catholics who are interested in getting acquainted with – or growing closer to – Cardinal Newman need look no further than www.Ignatius.com. Zeno is one of the world’s foremost Newman scholars, and this work is the result of his extensive research and review of Cardinal Newman’s letters, diaries, and complete published and unpublished sermons.
