Sept. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- Their is something special about dogs being "mans best friend" and that was truly evident at the 2010 "Surf Dog Surf a Thon" sponsored by the Helen Woodward Animal Center located in Rancho Sante Fe California.

The event in its fifth year raises money for a host of different adoption and education programs all focused on helping animals in all shapes and sizes find loving homes and enviroments to live in.

This years dog surfing event showcased some of the best doogie surfers and owners from San Diego and as far away as Ventura California. For many of the dog owners their surfing pooches have helped raise thousands of dollars from multiple events along the Southern California and Orange County coast.

"We have seen the talent from this event increase each year due to the fact that many dog owners have been active in working with their dogs in the water and also attent multiple events through out the year", said SoCal Beaches Magazine and TV spokesperson Mark Fitzgerald. "The quality of the rides and the amount of world wide interest is amazing"!

The "Surf Dog Surf a Thon" featured over 50 dogs and drew over 4,000 estimated spectators in addition to getting great local and world wide media coverage. This years event also showcased the popular "Doggie Surf Dog Fashion Show", which included a host of dogs dressed up in cute beach attire along with their owners.

The Helen Woodward dog surfing event is something special that unites families and friends for a common cause of giving back and helping out a world class charity in the San Diego area. Although dog surfing is fun to watch very few people realize how much teamwork is involved in getting both a dog and a surfboard out past the breakers and then retrieving the board and dog once a ride is over. With the help of dozens of volunteers and many generous sponsors this event continues to grow in popularity.

SoCal Beaches Magazine covers the event and has put together a "Best of" 2010 Helen Woodward Surf Dog Surf a Thon video that showcases clips of the dogs catching waves and some of the owners and behind the scenes shots many people do not get a chance to see.
