Follow on Google News | What's new in Medford Oregon History? The history of Southern Oregon isn't finished yet, and a small group of enthusiasts and professionals are actively searching out the truth behind old stories and finding new stories to tell.
By: Pixel Productions Inc. I've been immersed in local history for several years now; much of what I've found I've put on my web site, medfordhistory.com. While I've been trying to keep my research narrowly focused on Medford history, I often stumble across other Southern Oregon stories that need retelling: Like "A Night in Chinatown." I was looking for Medford tidbits in West Shore, a magazine published in Portland for a few years in the 1880s, when I ran into this article. For that reporter in 1886, going behind closed doors in Chinatown was like visiting another world. For the reader 124 years later, it's like visiting another planet. And the illustrations are wonderful. They need seeing. And then there are the Reminiscences of Orson Stearns. Stearns was an unabashed gossip, and his account of the settling of the Phoenix area--the drunks and philanderers, the fun and the work--makes you feel like you were there. He also appended a sketch of the life, death and discovery of Rogue Valley pioneer Sam Colver that ranges from funny to gruesome. A photocopy of his original handwritten manuscript has been on file at the Jackson County public library for decades, but it's never been as readable as it is now. So what's really new in Southern Oregon history? Well, thanks to Providence Hospital's Father Jim Clifford I spent an afternoon a few days ago exercising my rusty French by reading the Chronicles of Providence. From the hospital's beginnings in 1911 the nuns kept a running record of significant medical cases and the challenges the organization had to overcome. Nothing about Medford's celebrated white slavery case, unfortunately, but there's a lot of fascinating insight into the times. I plan to start putting excerpts of the translation online in a few weeks. The web page I'm working on right now, though, is a little less interesting-- If you want to know what's going on currently in Medford Oregon check out: http://www.iseemedford.com/ http://www.iseemedford.com/ # # # ISeeMedford.com is a comprehensive event calendar and visual business directory for Medford, Oregon and the surrounding areas.
