Canadian Action Party Concerned About Gentically Modified Salmon Entering Canada

Sept. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- The Canadian Action Party is concerned about the introduction of genetically modified
salmon into Canada.

The Food and Drug Administration of the United States is currently reviewing what could be the first genetically modified fish sold to people. Aqua Bounty Technologies Inc. Ceo, Ron Stottish says the fish is needed as the oceans are overstretched and human population is only going to increase. The salmon grows twice as fast as current farmed salmon by creating a new Atlantic salmon with a gene from a chinook salmon and DNA from a pout fish. The aim is to grow these inland to ensure no effects on wild salmon occur which are under threat around the world.

However,the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), with slack regulations, has already allowed wild salmon stocks to be threatened through Vancouver Island and BC by allowing open cage salmon farms. The threat was created by catering to Norwegian mega-corporations and allowing them to build the farms in the direct migratory routes of wild salmon, a practice that is outlawed in Norway. These devastating practices have even put wild killer whales at risk. Until these threats are corrected, new technologies such as genetically modified salmon need to be halted.

Canadian Action Party believes that food security should be based on the utilization and protection of the environment as it was meant to be. Without chemicals, without genetic modification and without corporate practices that sacrifice the environment for profit.
Sustainable development is possible and feasible. Food security for Canada can be provided by the local farms and fishermen of our Great Land. As it has done from the dawn of Canada. Canadian Action Party is dedicated to see a return to this.
