Happy Birthday, Constitution!

Sept. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- El Centro College celebrates the 223rd birthday of the U.S. Constitution this Thursday, September 16, beginning at 10:30 a.m., with a series of contests, conversations, and a kick-off to a student voter registration drive:

This is El Centro’s 5th annual Constitution Day Celebration, and  this year’s theme is "Federalism."  Highlights include “Constitution Jeopardy,” a conversation with City Councilwoman Pauline Medrano and State Representative Robert Miklos, and a contest for the most "constitutional" attire, as well as a launch of an all-week student-led voter registration drive.

“We want everyone in downtown Dallas to come by and participate in celebrating the U.S. Constitution,” said Gay Michele, government coordinator and co-chair of El Centro’s Constitution Day Committee.  “Our constitution is a remarkable document certainly worthy of celebration.  As Robert Byrd, Father of Constitution Day, once said, ‘Our ideals of freedom, set forth and realized in our Constitution, are our greatest export to the world.’”  

Michele added that the constitutional attire contest should be quite interesting, since the term “constitutional” is subject to some interpretation -- often like the constitution itself.  Fashion design and fashion marketing department chairs Michael Anthony and Marilyn Sullivan will be judging the attire contest.

Constitution Day, which is also known as Citizenship Day, is an American federal observance that recognizes the ratification of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens.  It is traditionally observed on September 17, the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787.
