September 10, 2010

(Calgary, AB) It’s never been easy to get published as an author. One of the reasons is that most major publishers producing 100 to 150 titles a year can receive around 5,000 or more annual pitches.

But the way most authors solicit their manuscripts is the reason why it’s usually easier to get an audience with the Pope than get a book published.

It’s why I became a publishing expert.

“Debbie has an amazing knowledge of the publishing industry."
Former NHL player and coach, Ryan Walter

Publishing a book isn’t for the faint of heart, but I’ve found a way to cut through the bull, streamline resources, and give people real information they can implement, all while making the process less daunting.

My websites (www.freelancepublishing.net and www.bookpublishingmember.com) offer links to many of the free resources I’ve posted that are immediately accessible.

I also have a bestselling book Self-Publishing 101 (published by Self-Counsel Press) and Book Publishing 101 Second Edition (published through Booklocker.com) that step-by-step authors through the publishing process.

But now, I’ve also introduced CDs of my workshops (http://www.freelancepublishing.net/workshops.htm), which are basically “workshops on wheels” to help walk people through the process even more. It’s taking the information from three-hour workshops and putting them into a format you can listen to at your leisure.

Here are the details:

Manuscripts Made Easy

Have an idea for a book, but don't know how to get started?

Learn how to outline your material, define the research, put the project in action, and break the manuscript down into manageable pieces and sections for paragraph and chapter development. Whether your book will be fiction or non-fiction, developing your manuscript will seem less onerous as you start to tie the pieces together.

Some of the points that will be covered are:

Developing the story
Writers’ block
Using ideas from other writers
Plagiarism, permissions, and credits
Learning to organize
Tools for crafting
Easy editing tips to improve your literacy skills by 25 percent

If the thought of writing makes you nervous, that you don’t think you have anything to write about, then this workshop will help you find your confidence by guiding you to conquer that fear.

CD is available here: http://www.freelancepublishing.net/workshop_a.htm

Book Publishing 101

You will be guided through the book publishing minefield and save yourself a ton of money and grief.

You’ll learn stuff that royalty published authors and the traditional publishing industry don’t necessarily want you to know.

Writing a book is perhaps the best way to tell your story, inspire others or show your expertise.

Everyone dreams about it. Books offer perceived credibility and expertise in your field. However, book publishing can take a great deal of time and money. It is not for the faint of heart. Even if authors are able to land a traditional publisher, the process and result are generally not what they expected. The learning curve was something they could have done without.

This workshop will alleviate some of the myths of book publishing and help you with the tools you need to oversee the process from start to finish. You will learn:

Publishing options and when to consider self-publishing versus traditional publishing
To dispel the myths: How the publishing industry works
How to find a publisher
How to improve the professionalism of your book
The process of publishing: Working with editors, graphic designers, and printers

You'll also be given inside information about how the industry is changing and what that means for you and maybe your pocketbook (it's a good thing!).

You'll be armed with the options and tools you need to make your book a success.

Provide no bull and give you concrete information you can put into action immediately

Marketing Your Book or Business on a Shoestring Budget

Are you looking for free and innovative ways to market your book or your business?

You'll learn to:

Think outside the traditional box
Use everything already at your fingertips to plant a seed
Learn how to make the best use of the Internet
Figure out how to get a book on Amazon and retail markets
Find other tie-ins for marketing
Solicit the media
Create a strong online profile
How to use social networking
