Sept. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- Back to school was also “back to after school”!  Forty-five young people, ages 5-17, inhabited the John S. Delaware Center for the J.C. Coleman Foundation after school program last week. These children come from neighborhood schools in addition to Pulaski and Bartlett.

With the theme of “Back to School,” participants, after doing their respective homework, heard a motivational speaker, decorated their personal writing journals, learned about Christmas Moultrie as their current event, watched Akeelah and the Bee , read silently, maneuvered their way through an obstacle course set up for them in the gym, and learned about Labor Day popular characters and professions.

This week’s theme is September 11th, so after having Labor Day off, again after homework, they are each making their own American flag out of miscellaneous materials like Popsicle sticks. Then, starting on Wednesday, they will watch the movie, We are Marshall , experience a “get to know you interview” with open-ended questions, and complete a 9-11-01 assignment. Then, on Friday, all 45 will attempt the “Treacherous Transfer,” a cooperative learning/ balancing activity that commands everyone’s attention.

Every day, after school participants receive a snack and, except for Friday, have the advantage of a full-course meal from America’s Second Harvest.

The first field trip is scheduled in two weeks on a Friday to the Jepson Center for the Arts. Here young people can experience hands-on art activities as well as enjoy the Master Artist on display.

The J.C. Coleman free after school program has had a tremendous beginning as we look forward to more excitement to come.
