A look at how Menorca has an important nature park
By: VacationRentalPeople

Sept. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- Menorca is a line with island of beautiful beaches but not many people think about the other side of Menorca that does bring tourists in.  On the 7th of October 1993 the island of Menorca was declared a Biosphere reserve by the International Committee of UNESCO.  This was because of it diverse environment and landscape, the island has an area of 700 kilometres in which nearly all of the natural habitats can be found.  The Biosphere classification cites a high number of endemic species of Flora and Fauna, also the traditional agricultural methods that demonstrate a harmony between man and nature.

Add to this the combination of unspoiled coastlines with pristine beaches and dune systems, also the lovely interior of the island with its canyons, caves, lush woodland and pastures which in spring becomes covered in wild flowers which hasn't changed in many years.

Today on the island has 19 areas of special interest and five natural reserves and parks, that includes  a marine reserve on the north coast and the natural park of S’Albufera des Grau on the eastern end of Menorca,  this island has many diverse places which will be ideal for nature lovers and can be easily access from all over the island so have no fear when looking at Menorca villas.

S'Albufera des Grau Nature Park is located in the north eastern region of the island Menorca.  It is one of the most important areas to see the wide variety of habitats.
The park is like an emblem for the people of Menorca, it helps that they are determined to conserve their beautiful island.  A large part of the park was actually intended to be a luxury resort of villas, swimming pools and golf courses in the 1980s.  But it was the determination of the people who had opposed the building of the resort, so it is thanks to the locals why the north east region has a lovely beach and wildlife especially the many visiting migrating birds which nest there.  It's ironic though as they wanted to build the resort in order to generate more tourist interest in the region especially as it is near Mahon but the S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park generates a lot of tourists alone thanks to the beautiful nature.

It first opened in 1995 and now the park covers over 5000 hectares and even includes 5 small islands that are just off the coast.  Thanks to a farm being situated in the boundaries of the park it means that it is still an area where work occurs, also there are remains of an old salt works which has been ingeniously adapted to blend into wetlands and marshes.

There is a wide range of Flora and Fauna in this nature park; here you find the holm oak and the wild olive, which at one time were the dominant species of trees.  But more recently woods of pine trees which introduced by man over the past centuries and have become more common than the native oak tree.
