Imagine. You`re eight years old. You feel your body is fighting against you. You`re scared. You can`t control your arms or legs then, all of a sudden, you black out because of a seizure.
For Toronto native, Dave Mendonca, this was a common occurrence from age 4 to 12. It was a horrifying experience for a child to go through.
Surprisingly, those challenges did not stop him from pursuing his passion -- sports. Even during his difficult years, he enjoyed watching Magic Johnson dominate on a basketball court and Jose Canseco bash a baseball.
The stranglehold Epilepsy once had on him was disappearing, but his love of sports had now fully grown. As a teenager, Mendonca downloaded hours of sports statistics, player and team information into his head like a kid today would download a pirated movie on his laptop.
Sports had consumed his brain. His photographic memory could memorize the backs of baseball and basketball cards with ease. He could instantly recall information from any sports source he had read. His sports trivia mind was officially born.
Fast forward to 2010, after having a career as a Canadian national television sports reporter where he interviewed athletes such as Chris Bosh, Wayne Gretzky and Marcus Allen, he was looking for a new challenge. ``It just got to a point where I wanted something different. I wanted to explore my business side and use my sports trivia knowledge in a positive way where I could connect with sports fans directly and build a great community,`` explains the 15-year media veteran.
It was many years in the making, but now, his creation has arrived. He recently launched http://www.ActionSportsTrivia.com, so it can be an interactive, fun experience for sports trivia buffs.
As Mendonca researched sports trivia websites, he noticed a glaring void. "There was no visual sign of a human being on these sites," says the Humber College Radio Broadcasting graduate. "I wanted to change that. When you come onto
http://www.ActionSportsTrivia.com, you'll be seeing me in weekly sports trivia question videos and other goodies. It's important that visitors feel a connection with the person behind the site. I want people to feel like I am their friend and Action Sports Trivia is their community."
Nowadays, life is much better for Mendonca. He'll never forget his challenges, but now, he is grateful for them.
