The nationwide unemployment rate pushed up to 9.6% last month, from 9.5% in July, the Labor Department reported on Friday. As the numbers continue to rise, competition becomes even fiercer for job seekers in a troubled economy.  “One option for some of the more entrepreneurial types is to take there skills of writing and planning to create for themselves a new career,” says Business Coach, Rodney D. Walker of Walker & Associates.

Nonprofit organizations are always looking for skilled grant writers to help present their projects to potential funders in a clear, concise, and appealing manner.  Yet, many busy executive directors simply do not have the time to lead their organizations effectively while pursuing every grant opportunity. Walker says, “A trained grant writer can help to relieve some of the economic anxiety by doing contract work for these executives.”

Walker has noticed an increased demand for his popular “Grant Writing That Gets Funded” workshop, workbook, and online course http://www.waa.bz/grantworkshop.html.    He estimates that about 1 out of every 6 attendees are seeking ways to get into the industry. “It’s actually not as hard as you would probably think,” says Walker who has coached several first time writers into learning how to write grants with much success.

The skill of developing a proposal of any kind is a valuable asset that can create greater opportunities and give job seekers a competitive edge.  Many job seekers in the nonprofit sector have reported they were unable to secure a job because they had no experience in grant writing.  Whether you are seeking a new career or simply developing a new skill set, learning to develop a strong proposal may open up new doors of opportunity.
