Sept. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- Activision: "The games featuring women do not sell"

The eternal debate of sexism in video games reopens following controversial statements by Activision, which argue that games featuring women just do not sell.

With these statements, Activision is just stating some facts: that games featuring women sell less. In the end, is a company that seeks to maximize profits, so even though - according to them - "never interfere in the creative process of their studies, have also recognized that" if the five best games of the year does not appear any played by a woman, Activision games will not have a female protagonist. " Thus, the company suggests a direct relationship between the success of a title and sex of / the star.

However, characters like Lara Croft - the Tomb Raider - or Samus Aran - Metroid Prime - Activision contradict the premise that the heroines do not sell games. The fiasco in sales of titles like Mirror's Edge was not due to the design of Faith, the protagonist, but an unbalanced gameplay and a story superfluous. And on Bayonetta, I do not think at all has been a failure, given that it has sold 1.1 million copies worldwide and has been placed as the second best selling title for Sega after its first month on sale . Compared to Devil May Cry 4, a title the same genre but with a male protagonist, only managed to sell over a million copies. Whereas the DMC series of Capcom has already made a name three deliveries from the fans, not bad for SEGA witch.

Therefore, I can not to agree with Activision on their posture. Not that the games with female protagonists do not sell well, but perhaps the design is not adequate. And there are the titles mentioned above to show that the problem is not the protagonist, but the game itself. Clearly, a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Gears of War or would not have a coherent framework for a female protagonist. But if someone were to create stories in a video game type Twilight, does anyone dare to bet that this does not succeed? I am sure would find an entire market of teenagers eager to get into the skin of a character like Bella and relive their love story in a videogame.
