PRLog (Press Release) - Sep. 3, 2010 - Android was first place among U.S. smartphones shipped in the second quarter, according to new research from Canalys. Android devices comprises 34 percent of phones shipped in the U.S. market in the district, and Research In Motion at 32.1 percent and 21.7 percent of Apple, Canalys found.
This means that Android had a huge increase of 851 percent compared to the previous year in the U.S.. This is mainly because the year before, there were several models available for Android phones. Canalys also that the U.S. is the largest smartphone market in the world by a wide margin, with phone 14700000 shipped in the quarter, representing 23 percent of global shipments.
Nokia continues to maintain a leading worldwide, with 38 percent market share in the quarter. Accounted for 76.9 percent of smartphones in China, the second largest smartphone market in the world, and Motorola with 4.7 percent share of any, Canalys said.

However, researchers see potential Android growth there. Nearly 475,000 Android phones sold in China in the second quarter, compared with almost none last year, Canalys said. Also, China Mobile expands its Android platform and on the basis of the additional 174,000 mobile phones sold this quarter, based on this platform, Canalys said.
Overall, the smartphone market grew by 64 percent in the quarter over the world. RIM phones increased by 41 percent and Apples iPhone shipments rose 61 percent. Apple had a share in the global smartphone market with 13 percent in the period, Canalys found.
