Sept. 1, 2010 - PRLog -- Shanikia Nicole Young, a junior at Columbus State University has been awarded $5,000 through The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) Scholar Abroad Scholarship for the fall 2010 semester.

Young, a native of Columbus, GA, selected Hirakata City, Osaka as her study abroad destination because of her desire to experience something new and explore the unknown. Young hopes that this trip will enable her to build upon the knowledge she has already acquired while studying her major, Psychology.

“During my study abroad trip, I plan to participate in some of the many diversity-centered programs that Kansai Gaidai University sponsors. They engender an environment where international students and Japanese students can learn from each other,” said Young.

Because the study abroad experience plays such a crucial role in students’ growth and development, NSCS awards the Scholar Abroad Scholarship to one outstanding NSCS member each semester to assist with the funding of his or her semester abroad.

NSCS awards $5,000 in the spring and fall semesters, and $2,500 in the summer.  Over 800 applications are received for this scholarship each year.

“We’re pleased to help Shanikia pursue a study abroad experience in Japan,” said Stephen E. Loflin, Executive Director and Founder of NSCS. “Her desire to expand her knowledge within her major and better understand the Japanese culture truly made her application stand out. We are proud to help her represent her school, community, NSCS and the United States overseas.”

Scholar Abroad applicants are required to answer two essay questions, provide at least one letter of recommendation and must be accepted into a study abroad program at the time of application. Applications are reviewed by the NSCS Scholarship Review Committee, which is based in the organization’s national office in Washington, D.C.
